What is muslin?
Muslin is a thin, translucent, breathable cotton fabric.
Benefits:
Sensation of the maternal womb: Swaddling the baby in muslin recreates the safe and cozy feeling of the womb. Babies experience the gentle pressure that mimics that sensation. Wrapping them in a muslin swaddle blanket is self-soothing, reduces stress by lowering blood pressure, heart rate and cortisol concentrations, which leads to a longer and more restful sleep with less discomfort. Babies swaddled in muslin swaddle blankets tend to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep more consistently throughout the night.
Muslin swaddle blankets regulate colic: Colic is one of the most frustrating challenges parents face in their children’s first months of life. The colicky baby is experiencing extreme pain. The light pressure of a swaddle wrap can have a tremendously therapeutic effect on a baby with colics, providing much-needed relief for both parents and their baby.
Muslin swaddle blankets regulate the baby's body temperature:Newborns who are still adjusting to life outside the womb cannot regulate their body temperature on their own. Breathable, moisture-wicking muslin swaddle blankets keep your baby warm without the danger of overheating.
Avoid suffocation: Wrapped arms prevent babies from covering their faces with bedding, thus avoiding the danger of suffocation.
How to wrap your baby in a muslin swaddle blanket?
- Fold the muslin blanket into a triangle, and place the baby in the center with their shoulders under the fold.
- Place the baby's right arm along with the body, slightly bent. Pull the right corner of the muslin blanket over her body, tucking the cloth under the baby.
- Push the bottom corner of the swaddle up and over the baby's feet. Tuck the end of the fabric on top of the muslin.
- Place the baby's left arm along with the body, slightly bent. Wrap the remainder of the muslin over the baby's arm and chest, tucking the cloth under the baby to secure the swaddle.
Advantages of Pacifiers
For some babies, pacifiers are the key to feeling full between feedings.
- A pacifier could calm an upset baby. Some babies are happiest when they are sucking on something.
- A pacifier offers a temporary distraction.
- A pacifier can help your baby fall asleep. If your baby is restless at bedtime, a pacifier could be the solution.
- A pacifier could ease discomfort during flights. Babies may not intentionally unclog their ears by swallowing or yawning to relieve pain caused by changes in air pressure. Sucking on the pacifier might work.
- A pacifier could help reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Sucking on a pacifier during naps and when sleeping at night may reduce the risk of SIDS.
Recommendations:
- Choose a one-piece pacifier variety that is dishwasher safe. Two-piece pacifiers are a choking hazard if they break.
- Let your baby set the pace: if your baby is not interested in the pacifier, do not force them to use it. Every baby is different and therefore not all of them like the same thing.
Keep your pacifier clean: Until your baby is around six months old and their immune system matures, boil pacifiers frequently or wash them in the dishwasher. You can also store your pacifiers in our Clöud Silicone cases. After six months, simply wash the pacifiers with soap and water. You cannot clean a pacifier by placing it in your own mouth. You will only spread more germs to your baby.
- Do not sweeten it: Do not put sweet substances in the pacifier.
Keep it in a safe place, replace pacifiers frequently and use the right size for your baby's age. Pay attention to signs of deterioration.
